How To Live More Sustainably At Home
Nov 18th 2021
A sustainable lifestyle is not only what you wear and what you speak, but the kind of environment you live in. Your home is the number one indicator of your personality, character, and virtues. The type of furniture, materials, and products you place and use in your home shows a lot more of who you are as a person than you might think.
To live sustainably requires a conscious approach to all areas of your life, but first and foremost, to your own home - which is why we will focus on the importance of sustainable home decor.
Here we share with you a few tips on living a more sustainable life, starting in your own home:
1) Make sure that the products you purchase are sustainable-certified Or look for business that are transparent about they product origin, their suppliers, and source.
There are lots of sustainable products marketed as healthy, eco-friendly, hand-made, etc. - but you can make sure if they are legitimately sustainable by verifying if they are certified or not. You can start by purchasing from brands that have the GREENGUARD certification label or brands that are transparent about their sources, the people behind their products, the raw material used and produce in small batch. This is true specially because most small companies can't afford to pay for certifications even if they are promoting business as a force for good.
2) Invest in long-lasting products
If you want to ensure that you purchase the best products, pay close attention to the type of materials used for each item before buying. And keep in mind the raw materials that are the least harmful to the ecosystem.
Now, if you are one who will go the extra mile and purchase second-hand/upcycled home decor, only buy items that will last at least a year or two. Otherwise, it isn't worth it.
3) Raw materials and integrity
As mentioned previously, it is crucial to buy items made of raw materials and are environmentally safe. The production process is also something to pay close attention to - such as the techniques used in the making process of the item and whether it was slow-made or machine-made.
Don't just honor the materials, but the process and every single human and land that contributed to the craft that decorates your abode.
4) Re-use
Perhaps you've got a whole closet full of stored items from a decade ago like rugs, carpets, picture frames, etc. Bring them back to life by complementing your space with these ageless decorations - you could also use your creativity to use your colorful blankets as carpets or your vintage hats to excite your walls.
Be the person who asks questions before purchasing - the right brand will be delighted to share an item's background. Be the person who knows what materials make up their bedside table. Be the person whose sustainable home is their creative well and resting cocoon!
